EPISODE 6, SCENE
4 Kelly Foster was lacing up her skates in the warming hut of the Town Park ice rink as Luanne Rice entered. They introduced themselves. When Luanne had called her a few days ago to suggest an interview for the "Profile" feature of the Avalanche, Kelly had hesitated. She'd never been interviewed before. To put Kelly at ease, Luanne suggested they meet at the ice rink and skate around awhile to get comfortable with each other. Kelly agreed. "Didn't I see you at Richard Starbuck's New Year's Eve party?" Kelly asked. Luanne nodded ruefully as she sat down to change into her skates. "Not one of my best nights." "Why not?" "Oh, it's a long story," Luanne replied. "Ending with me going to bed with the wrong guy." Kelly laughed. They walked out of the hut and stepped onto the ice. Both were accomplished skaters. "You're working for Jordan Thorne, right?" Luanne asked. "Yes," Kelly replied. "And I'm teaching privates for the ski school. Jordan's great about letting me make my own schedule. Even though lately he's been under a lot of stress because the Clifftop timeshares aren't selling fast enough." Kelly suddenly caught herself. "I probably shouldn't have told you that. I forgot you're a reporter." Luanne laughed. "I'll keep it off the record. Promise." They skated past a little girl doing dizzying Katarina Witt dips and twirls while her parents watched encouragingly from behind the rink wall. "Jordan must still be grieving about his mom and the plane crash," Luanne said. Kelly considered a moment. "Not that I've seen", she replied. "If it were me, I'd be a mess. But he comes into the office full of energy, talking about deals, worrying about Clifftop. It's weird, like he's erased what happened." Luanne recalled her interview this morning with Marshall Tramaine. Maybe it was just the way Kelly talked, but an intriguing notion started forming in Luanne's mind. Was there any connection between Jordan Thorne's strange absorption with Clifftop and the plane crash that killed his mother? |
