EPISODE 3, SCENE 4
Richard led Luanne down Upper Silverglade, digging on the powder untouched by the tourists who'd never find this secret path known only to locals.

"Whoa!" Luanne yelled as she blew a turn and slid into the snow to avoid a tree. Richard stopped. "You're doin' great, Lu," he said. All that Vermont hardpack toughened you up."

"I'm just beat," she sighed, pulling herself together. "Five miles cross-country with my dad and mom this morning, now trying to keep up with you. The usual suspects'll be at your party?" she asked. Richard nodded. His New Year's Eve bash was infamous. "The food's gonna be better this year," he said. Monika and Cindy are cooking. Hope you'll show up in one of those great dresses?" For last year's Starbuck soiree, Luanne had found a forties cocktail outfit with plunging neckline and matching heels in a shop across from the Ice House. It was the only night of the town's citizens dressed up, and they really did it. Even Summit Man showed, resplendent in a tux and tails.

"I'll be there around ten," Luanne replied, pleased that he remembered her outfit. "First I've gotta drop by the Fireman's Ball. A guy I know is playing in the band." She didn't want him to think she was totally available, even though she was.

She was having a good time with him though. The thing with Starbuck, Luanne thought, was that for all his hip-to- the-tip Aussie charm, there was a flicker of true soul to him. She liked the combination and tended to overlook his lesser bullshit. Plus they were great in bed together (unlike the college boys, Richard knew how to take his time), and she didn't overlook that.
